Build-up to Africamp 2005 begins
Dear Africampers,
Hi, this is your first update from the team at Adventure Alternative regarding your time in Kenya this summer!
At anytime if you have any questions please feel free to call or email us on the numbers below. This also applies to your parents or family as we are only too aware that this expedition is not only a journey for you but also those at home.
Over the coming months it is important that you check your email for these updates and also that you print them out, as prior to departure you will need to check that you have covered every point that we have mentioned in our check-list found at the end of the emails. If your email address changes or it is hard for you to check you will need to inform us so we can post you out a hard copy or alternatively all new updates will be posted on the website.
You should have received a letter from us regarding your flights, times, dates, terminals etc. If you haven't already booked a flight through us you will need to get all your flight details sent to us. The letter should explain everything.
If you are using the expedition for your Duke of Edinburgh's Award you will also need to seek the appropriate approval and download all the info found on the right hand side of the Africamp web page found at www.adventurealternative.com/africamp.htm You will also need to have completed all necessary practise hikes before going to Kenya.
You should have all now received your Team Brief which includes the kit list. It is not necessary to go out and spend hundreds of pounds on new kit. If you have any questions about your boots or sleeping bag etc you should contact our equipment officer Andy on andy@adventurealternative.com or call him on 028 90701476.
It is very important that you read the kit list over and over again. People have the perception that Africa is roasting hot and forget that the mountain can be freezing cold. Temperatures of -5 are not uncommon! Only to often people have arrived out in Kenya with no thermals, waterproofs or a caravan sleeping bag.
The other issue you should be considering now is your jabs! The sooner you have them done the better. We, due to not having been to medical school, can't give out a list of what you need to get. The type of jabs you need change each year and you will need to go to your doctor or travel clinic and get the latest advice. The one grey area which creeps up each year is Rabies. The latest advise was that you don't need it unless you will be more than 72hrs away from a hospital. This will not be the case hence you don't need it. It also cost 90GBP! If you are getting Yellow Fever you should staple the certificate inside your passport as some countries (not Kenya) require you to show it on entry and if you are travelling in the future it is very easy to lose.
Some people have also been asking about visa's. You can either apply for this through the Kenyan embassy in London or buy it on arrival. Buying it on arrival is by far the easiest method.
We will need everyone to photocopy their passport and send a copy into the Belfast office - 31 Myrtledene Rd, Belfast, N.Ireland, BT8 6GQ.
That's about all the info at the minute. Things in Kenya are coming on well and the Kenyan team are getting very excited about meeting you all. There are some wonderful projects planned for the teams going out. If you would like to get to know each other before going out you should sign up to the message boards on the Adventure Alternative website.
The next email will have your day to day itinerary and some more info on the planning and things you need to be doing.
The Tick List:
• Ensure email address is checked and working
• Organise Duke of Edinburgh's Award paperwork for OAP
• Check Kit list especially mountain gear
• Check with the Doc about jab's
• Send Photocopy of passport to us next week if possible
• Ring Gavin, Chris or Andy with any questions.
I hope you are all well and looking forward to the expedition. If you haven't already you can have a look at www.africamppost.com which has a few tales from last year.
All the Best,
Gavin, Chris and Andy.
